Two Beachwood First Aid Squad members took issue Wednesday night with Mayor Ronald W. Jones Jr ‘s proposal to move the squad into the building now occupied by .the Sewerage Authority, which Jones wants to abolish.

The members, speaking at a Borough Council meeting, disagreed with Jones’s abandoning his previous plan to construct a new first aid building on the squad’s current site at Beachwood Boulevard and Capstan Avenue.

Jones’s current proposal includes making improvements to the sewerage authority building to allow the first aid squad to move into it and to have the squad’s current site sold.

First aid squad member Linda Lamar of Cable Avenue said the authority building at 1233 Beach Ave. would be a dangerous spot for residents and squad members because of increased traffic.

”I feel It’s better centralized where it is“ said Lamar. ”That location is very dangerous for the children coming and going from school. There is more traffic and a higher hazard for accidents“

Salvatore Murante, another first aid squad member, said that the squad has been working for five years to develop a construction plan for a new building on its current site, which would include parking facilities for volunteers and the emergency vehicles.

Jones said the council is looking to save the taxpayers money while doing something beneficial for the community, and if the squad’s plan for a new building is more beneficial than updating the authority building, the borough would follow through with a new building for the squad.
